Technology Thought to Be Educational

With cell phones as with all technology thought to be educational, educators expect that:

1. Manipulation of external vehicles (things, tools, technologies) I. The very engagement with the technology is a thoughtful act of creation. Consider the design of a spreadsheet or writing a paper with a word processor as examples.

2.Manipulation of external vehicles (things, tools, technologies) II. The interface with the technology is a thoughtful engagement with ideas. Consider a simulation or a gaming envronment.

3. The affordances of any technology are relative to the skill of the user. Consider the skill needed to build a website or to edit a video or to use a word processor. (Present to Hand v. Ready to Mind)

5. The technology affords the offloading of knowledge and/or skill as a condition for learning more advance knowledge or developing more advanced skill

6. The use of the technology provides thoughtful guidance and/or timely feedback to both teacher and student

Other Ideas?


With cell phones as with all technology, teachers are scornful of:

  1. Deskilling;
  2. Offloading primary knowledge or skill;
  3. Mindlessness;
  4. Distractions;
  5. Exit portals; …
  6. Correctives? Additions?
